ICE Carbon Champions

Engineering Sustainable Solutions for a Low-Carbon Railway

Recognising the climate emergency, FJD Consulting leads the transportation civil engineering sector in carbon quantification, whole-life sustainability, and low-carbon materials engineering.

Our staff were designated ICE Carbon Champions by the Institution of Civil Engineers for creating and executing our proprietary Capital Carbon Assessment Tool, enabling clients to evaluate and opt for low-carbon design interventions before committing to construction.

Capital Carbon Assessment Tool

Granular calculation of embodied and operational carbon across all GRIP stages to drive informed client optioneering.

Low-Carbon Materials Selection

Deploying precast modular concrete, durable GRP components, and composite materials that extend design lives up to 120 years.

Network Rail Net Zero Roadmaps

Partnering with Train Operating Companies (TOCs) and Tier 1 contractors to eliminate site waste and achieve PAS 2080 standards.

Procurement & Governance

Frequently Asked Engineering Questions

Direct, factual guidance regarding Network Rail governance, CRE/CEM technical leadership availability, and contractor procurement frameworks.

We recognise that possession minutes are non-negotiable. FJD Consulting operates a responsive technical query framework with a commitment to resolving the vast majority of TQs within 72 hours during design development. During live weekend or 5-day blockade possessions (such as our 240t DCL-56 River Cherwell installation), our Chartered Engineers are on-call and on-site to provide immediate, same-shift responses.

Yes. Our leadership team includes verified Contractors Responsible Engineers (CRE - Design) and Contractors Engineering Managers (CEM) across Civil, Structural, Geotechnical, and M&E disciplines in compliance with Network Rail standard NR/L2/RSE/02005. We regularly act as the Lead Design Organisation (LDO) on complex multidisciplinary station and track renewals.

We guide third-party developers, local councils, and contractors through the entire Basic Asset Protection Agreement (BAPA) process. We prepare Form A and Form B technical submissions, coordinate gauging clearance analyses, perform independent Category 3 structural checks, and directly liaise with Network Rail Route Asset Managers (RAMs) to de-risk lineside developments.

FJD Consulting is a fully verified supplier under the Railway Industry Supplier Qualification Scheme (RISQS) across core civil, structural, and M&E product codes. We are CyberEssentials certified, Constructionline registered, and maintain active delivery partnerships with Tier 1 contractors including Story Contracting, Balfour Beatty Rail, Taziker, Siemens Mobility, and KeolisAmey.

Developed in-house by our ICE Carbon Champions, the tool models embodied carbon across raw material extraction, transport, construction methodology, and operational maintenance. By introducing carbon metrics at early GRIP 3/4 optioneering, we identify high-impact alternatives—such as precast modular concrete footbridges or reusable GRP temporary works—cutting carbon by up to 40% compared to traditional steel structures.
