Our Heritage & Culture

Engineering Excellence Through Collaborative Delivery & Human Care

Founded in 2012 in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter with regional expansion into Bristol, FJD Consulting was created to replace bureaucratic silos with an agile, multidisciplinary "one-team approach".

Established 2012

Pioneering Rail Engineering for Over a Decade

FJD Consulting was founded with a singular conviction: that rail infrastructure projects demand high-value specialised technical rigor without the inertia, excessive overheads, and communication friction of legacy corporate consultancies.

Rooted in the UK heavy railway sector, our teams have made decisive design contributions to landmark schemes across the Network—from the £6 billion Thameslink Programme and the Bristol Temple Meads Grade I listed transformation to the Core Valley Lines modernization and innovative bridge replacements like DCL-56 Old River Cherwell.

Operating from regional hubs at 87 Caroline Street in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter and Broad Quay House in Bristol, we combine local route familiarity with national engineering capability. Our team has built an enviable industry reputation for concept development, research and development (R&D), and low-carbon design selection.

Guiding Direction

Our Purpose & Long-Term Vision

Balancing engineering precision with sustainable stakeholder relationships and a workplace where talented people genuinely thrive.

Our Business Purpose

To inspire engineering excellence through our people and sustainable stakeholder relationships. We aspire to maintain a vibrant, positive working environment where engineers can showcase their technical skills and create solutions that contribute to a resilient, low-carbon future for the built environment.

Our Long-Term Vision

To be the workplace of choice in the transport engineering sector. We empower individuals through flexible, hybrid work arrangements that fuel technical innovation, psychological safety, and personal wellbeing. Our enhanced benefits and structured Wellbeing, Performance & Development Reviews provide clear, supported paths to ICE and IStructE chartered status.

Guiding Principles

The EPICT Values (E.P.I.C.T.)

Five core values shape how we interact with colleagues, contractors, asset managers, and communities every day.

Energy

Approaching technical challenges with proactive enthusiasm, urgency, and positive momentum. We relish tackling complex engineering hurdles on tight possession programmes.

Professional

Upholding uncompromising standards of technical accuracy, safety verification, ethical conduct, and Network Rail standard compliance (NR/L2/RSE/02005) in every calculation.

Innovate

Questioning legacy conventions to pioneer precast concrete modular decks, composite materials, automated CAD sighting routines, and low-carbon engineering solutions.

Care

Demonstrating genuine empathy for our staff's mental health, workload balance, and career growth, alongside careful stewardship of public infrastructure funds and the natural environment.

Team

Championing our multidisciplinary "one-team approach". Civils, Structures, Geotechnical, and M&E engineers collaborate without internal silos to deliver unified client solutions.

Industry Credibility

Social Responsibility

Commitment to a Greener Built Environment

As Chartered Engineers, we recognise our professional and moral obligation to develop solutions for a net-zero future. We evaluate every design option against the latest UK sustainability and circular economy frameworks.

Our staff were designated ICE Carbon Champions for developing the Capital Carbon Assessment Tool, which models whole-life carbon across extraction, manufacturing, delivery, installation, and decommissioning.

Embodied Carbon Minimisation

Prioritising precast modular elements, GRP cable routes, and low-cement concrete mixes to lower upfront carbon expenditure.

Whole-Life Asset Resilience

Designing structures with 120-year design lives that resist corrosion, scour, and climate extremes with minimal maintenance interventions.

PAS 2080 Compliance

Helping Tier 1 contractors and Network Rail clients meet strict carbon management targets across GRIP 3 to 8.

Work With Us

Our Power is Our People

A diverse, mentored, and supported team is the foundation of technical innovation. We invest passionately in the next generation of engineers.

Inclusivity Commitment

RIA & Women in Rail EDI Charter

FJD is an active signatory of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Charter. We believe our consultancy can only thrive if every engineer is guided, celebrated, and given equal opportunity to excel regardless of background.

We regularly take part in STEM careers events across West Midlands and South West secondary schools, technical colleges, and universities to champion diversity in transport civil engineering.

All employees receive tailored professional development plans supported by our annual Wellbeing, Performance & Development Reviews, with full employer sponsorship for ICE and IStructE professional review fees.

Emerging Talent Testimonials

Apprenticeships & Student Placements

Read authentic feedback from secondary school and university students who joined our teams for work experience:

"My two weeks with FJD were insightful and fun! I gained genuine hands-on CAD experience, saw how real structural drawings are approved for Network Rail, and felt supported by everyone." — Elizabeth, Work Experience Student (Summer 2025)
"The senior engineers were always happy to explain the 'why' behind structural sizing and platform clearances. FJD is welcoming, collaborative, and full of energy." — Sam, Work Experience Student (April 2026)
